Senator Billy Lawless became the first sitting Irish Senator to address the Annual Harp and Shamrock Society Gala in San Antonio Texas on Saturday, September 17. The Society marked its 50th anniversary this year and is the largest Irish cultural organization of its kind in the American South East.
In remarks that night Senator Lawless noted: “I stand here this evening as an appointee to the Irish Senate, to give official voice to the millions of Irish men and women who left Ireland’s shores, but who never forgot, the land of their birth, or lost their innate sense of Irish identity. Over 70 million people claim Irish ancestry globally.
My appointment is an official and long overdue nod to Ireland’s diaspora, and an acknowledgement that the people of our proud and ancient island, desire a modern and mature relationship with their fellow Irishmen and women living abroad.”
