Former President of Ireland, former UN High Commissioner on Human Rights and current UN Special Envoy for Climate and El Nino, Mary Robinson came to Chicago for a lunch and fundraiser on Thursday, September 15th.
The former President was in town to raise funds for The Mary Robinson Centre in Co. Mayo Ireland. Senator Lawless emceed a lunch in her honor for over 400 people in Chicago’s Hilton Hotel (organized by Tom Coffey of the Haymarket Group), where President Robinson addressed the attentive audience. She hailed the efforts of women in Ireland with a comment that went viral:
” Instead of rocking the cradle, women rocked the system”
Chicago City Council also recognized the incredible contributions of Mary Robinson by honoring her with the city’s highest accolade – the Medal of Merit – in a ceremony attended by Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Chicago’s longest serving Alderman, Ed Burke. She did not accept the honor without some poignant words on the violence plaguing Chicago as reported by the Sun Times.
